I am Erika Deery, author of Millie va al espacio/ Millie goes to Space, a Spanish – English picture book. I have always enjoyed drawing, so when I had my little girl I decided it would be nice to create a book for her. I thought of the idea of a book about space travel when I was flying to Mexico from Australia with my then six month old. Then, in Mexico, I started sketching my characters. After a few months, I had managed to complete a real book.
After showing it to some of my Spanish speaking friends, they all thought the book was bilingual, and I realised that many parents in bilingual families usually have to translate on the go or have to read completely different things to their children. I want to help bilingual parents read to their children and I plan to write a few more bilingual children’s books. In this website, I will also share info about other bilingual books that are fun and engaging.
But enough about the book, here are some other things about me 🙂 :
- I can’t start the day without my large skinny latte.
- My tabuelo (grandpa) taught me how to draw.
- I am addicted to chips with salsa Valentina and lime.
- I binge watch Netflix.
- I was raised by a tribe of strong and wonderful women, this is probably why ‘I can’t do (_____) because I am a girl’ never really crossed my mind.
- I an only child but my cousins are like brothers and sisters to me.
- My top 3 favourite buildings in the world are: the Sydney Opera house, the Eiffel Tower and Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico.
- I love love love podcasts.
- I think I can speak French better than I do.

Soy Erika Deery, autora de Millie va al espacio/ Millie goes to Space, un libro infantil en español e inglés. Siempre me ha gustado dibujar, así que cuando tuve a mi bebita decidí que estaría padre crear un libro para ella. Se me ocurrió la idea de un libro sobre un viaje al espacio mientras volaba a México desde Australia con mi bebé que entonces tenía seis meses. Después, en México, comencé a dibujar mis personajes. Después de varios meses, había escrito e ilustrado un libro de verdad.
Luego de enseñarle el libro a mis amigas hispanoparlantes, todas pensaron que el libro era bilingüe. Fue ahí cuando me di cuenta que muchos papás y mamás bilingües generalmente tienen que traducir un libro mientras lo leen a su bebé o leen cosas completamente diferentes que el otro padre. Empecé este proyecto porque quiero ayudar a otros papás bilingües a leer a sus pequeñitos, y planeo escribir más libros bilingües para niños. En esta página, también te voy a compartir información sobre otros libros bilingües que son divertidos e interesantes para tus niños.
Pero bueno, ya hablamos mucho de mi libro, aquí hay otros datos para que conozcas más acerca de mi 🙂 :
- No puedo empezar el día sin mi large skinny latte. Así lo pido tal cual.
- Mi tabuelo me enseño a dibujar.
- Soy adicta a las papitas con Valentina y limón (si eres mexicano es posible que tú también lo seas).
- Veo mucho Netflix.
- Me crié con una tribu de mujeres fuertes y maravillosas. Tal vez por eso nunca digo que no puedo hacer algo solo porque soy niña.
- Soy hija única pero mis primos y primas son como mis hermanos.
- Mi top 3 de edificios favoritos en el mundo son: la Opera House de Sydney, la torre Eifel y el Palacio de Bellas Artes.
- También me encanta escuchar podcasts.
- Pienso que hablo francés mejor de lo que en realidad lo hablo.
